An Australian Superior Court finally reached a decision on the case of a cheating casino player, confirming the $600 fine and the measure by which the player cannot attend casinos, gaming venues and bingo halls for two years. The ruling aims to punish the player and help him overcome his addiction at the same time.
The punter was caught in February 2002 while he was cheating in baccarat and mini-baccarat tables. The man was a habitué of casinos and bingo clubs since 1988 and he had developed a strategy to place his bets when the hands had finished. Casino authorities found him cheating in three different occasions.
The first time the player deceived the casino, the personnel of the gaming center made him acknowledge his mistake and he had no choice but to accept it. However, he said he had no intention of cheating but made a mistake due to “a distraction” and he agreed to return the money.
After the gambler continued cheating and ignoring rules, the casino decided to file a claim with the Gambling Agency, which fined him with $600 banned him from the casinos for two years. Although the player appealed this decision, the Supreme Court confirmed it, since it considered that such an experienced gambler cannot be excused for following forbidden practices.
