Cathy Doyle Johnston, spokeswoman for the California Lottery, informed that Thomas Thornton, who resides in Coachella Valley, is the winner of the $34 million Mega Millions jackpot.
"I am stunned, shocked and excited. I have worked hard all my life and will continue to do so, but this jackpot will allow me to lend a hand to members of my family in need of a little extra help and do many special things for my wife", the lucky winner said.
According to Lottery officials, Thornton chose the cash option and will receive about $17 million due to taxes. He bought the ticket at La Quinta Liquor and Deli that will receive $170,000 as a reward for selling the ticket.
Thornton told the press that he found out on Monday night that someone had bought the winning ticket in La Quinta but did not check his ticket until the next day.
